2007 SAN DIEGO EXHIBIT

The Maritime Museum of San Diego (MMSD, see above photo) hosted an ASMA Region 5 Maritime Art Exhibit from October 9 through December 3, 2007. The exhibition coincided with the Eighth Maritime Heritage Conference, a triennial event designed for those from all walks of life interested in maritime culture, history, and heritage. The ASMA exhibit, titled “Visions of the Pacific Coast,” displayed the work of 17 ASMA members from California, Oregon and Washington. MMSD hung the exhibit on the historic bark Star of India, in a space that coincided with selected working sessions of the conference. In addition to the Conference, the Star of India participated in the Museum’s annual sail on November 10 and 11, and held its annual birthday celebration on November 17. All of these events drew large numbers of people who had the opportunity to see the ASMA exhibit. The opening reception was in conjunction with the opening event of the Maritime Heritage Conference, which was attended by approximately 400 people. ASMA artists at the opening included Robert Dykes, Louis Gadal, Norma Jay, William Lowe, Jon Olson, William Rouzie, Alan Ryall and Edward Tyndale. Also participating in the show but not attending the opening were Buck Braden, Dennis Durrell, Austin Dwyer, Adam Koltz, Gerrye Riffenburgh, Grant Saylor, Frank Walsh, Sylvia Waters and Richard Weddlegon. Robert Dykes, who was the ASMA coordinator for the exhibit, is discussing with the Museum’s Exhibition Coordinator another show in 2008 or 2009. Images of artwork from the show are given below.
