Aqueous IV Exhibit
The Ventura County Maritime Museum (VCMM) invitational exhibit Aqueous IV, featuring thirty-nine pieces by twenty members of the American Society of Marine Artists opened on October 3, 2009 and continues through January 31, 2010.
An opening reception on October 17 was attended by 61 artists, museum staff and the general public (See pictures below).
Aqueous IV is a juried exhibit limited to work by artists in the ASMA-West Region which covers twenty-two, primarily western states plus the U.S. Navy fleet post office. The jury consisted of Jacquelyn Cavish, Curator of Art at VCMM, plus Alan Ryall and Dutch Mostert, both signature members of ASMA. Ribbon awards, based on the jury’s scoring of images submitted by the artists and limited to one award per artist, were the following: Best of Show: Bronze Sculpture, “Maternal Quest,” Kim Shaklee, Brighton CO; First Prize: Oil Painting, “The Californian Passes a Schooner off the California Coast,” William Lowe, Dana Point, CA; Second Prize: Gouache Painting, “Sea Shells,” Robert Arlt, Los Angeles CA; Third Prize: Watercolor Painting, “In for Repairs,” Ray Hunter, Santa Barbara, CA; Honorable Mentions: Oil Painting, “Northwest Time Out,” Frank Gaffney, Kirkland WA; Oil Painting, “Symphony of Rust, Alaska,” Austin Dwyer, Mukilteo WA; Oil Painting, “Vintage Oxford,” Debra Huse, Costa Mesa CA; “Fourth of July,” Louis Stephen Gadal, Los Angeles, CA.
Artists also featured in the exhibit include: Betty Blount, June Carey, Jack Comiskey, Steve Henderson, Harold Johnson, Adam Koltz, Carolyn Hesse-Lowe, Dutch Mostert, Jon Olson, Gerrye Riffenburgh, Alan Ryall and Sylvia Waters.
The VCMM is known not only for its permanent, world-class collection of marine art and historic ship models, but has established a reputation for exhibiting the work of internationally recognized contemporary marine artists. In 2000, 2002 and 2005, the Museum hosted invitational exhibits of artwork by ASMA-West members, titled Aqueous, Aqueous II and Aqueous III. Works by several of ASMA’s best-known artists -- David Thimgan, John Stobart, Thomas Hoyne and Thomas Wells -- are exhibited as part of the Museum’s permanent collection.
