Mountain States

Below the Falls - Rocky Mountain National Park, Kathryn A. McMahon, Oil, 20”x24

..........“Just as two raindrops falling an inch apart may hit a steep mountain ridge and flow down opposite slopes into different rivers and ultimately end up in two distant oceans, thousands of miles apart from each other, so too, in almost every aspect of life, a tiny difference, a subtle change, is often all that is required to set in motion irreversible new changes that compound upon themselves again and again until the possible outcomes are worlds apart”.

Priceless – The Vanishing beauty of a fragile Planet
The Mountain States of Region Five in the American Society of Marine Artists are Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. Though none of these states have coastal waterways, they have different and important bodies of water within them. The headwaters of the Colorado River begin in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. At an elevation of 9010 feet it flows southwestward towards the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean. Utah has the Great Salt Lake and Nevada has Lake Mead. Wyoming treasures the Yellowstone River, the Missouri and Green River. Montana sports Flat Head Lake and Glacier National Park with numerous river and streams. Each state has a multitude of waters which give inspiration to create from.
Whether it is a Painter’s quest to capture the sunlight as it dances over the rippling water onto river rocks, or a Sculptor or Carver who delights in solidifying their memories of an Otter in a nearby stream, we all share a mysterious bond to the water.
