Oregon

THE WATCHERS, Dutch Mostert, watercolor

..........Most people who have been to Oregon will readily agree that its coastline is one of the most spectacular and varied in the world. From a marine artist's point of view, the Oregon coast offers some of the most incredible vistas, from pristine sandy beaches and dunes to towering cliffs and offshore sea stacks. In addition to the picturesque fishing ports and villages, there are several deep-water harbors and a string of charming lighthouses to paint. Along the Columbia there is a marvelous variety of interesting river traffic. Everything from recreational boating, sport and commercial fishing, to tug and barge, large ship, and all manner of working boats can be found there to complement the fascinating dock and harbor scenes of Astoria and Portland. All these features combine to help make Oregon a maritime painter's dream come true!

This year the Coos Art Museum will be hosting its 16th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition on the scenic southern Oregon coast. Details for participating artists can be found on the Museum’s website, and on this website under EXHIBITS.

This year’s Featured Artist for the Exhibition is Buck Braden, a resident of Tualatin, Oregon. Several works by this talented artist will be on display in the Perkins gallery during the Annual Maritime Art Exhibition from July 11 through September 19, 2009. The Exhibition opens at 3:30 pm, July 11 and presents some of the finest maritime art from across the United States. The opening is to be followed by a dinner/art auction fundraiser held at 5 pm inside the museum.

Buck is widely known for both maritime art and for figure painting. Buck received his Master of Arts from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas and studied figure painting at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. His maritime paintings have been exhibited at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, Newport Harbor Nautical Museum, Oregon Maritime Museum, and Mystic Maritime Gallery in Mystic, Connecticut. Buck has shown at Coos Art Museum’s Annual Maritime Art Exhibition since 1994 and has exhibited in the museum’s Expressions West competition. Buck is a member of ASMA, which is cosponsoring the Exhibition.

Finally, if you're visiting the Coos Bay area, there is a plein air group that paints on Tuesdays, weather permitting. If you would like to join us, or if you just want to know the best places to paint in this area, call ASMA Regional Representative Dutch Mostert at 541.756.3765.
